This stop honours this University of Oxford college as it was one of the first two women’s colleges in the city to ‘include the excluded’ (1879). It was created for women when universities refused them entry. Somerville alumni consists of some major international figures such as Maragret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi (3rd Prime Minister of India), and Vera Brittain (who wrote ‘Testament of Youth’ as a cry of outrage and agony, so that the futility of the deaths of World War I soldiers would be remembered).
